OAKLAND — As the mascot at Montclair Elementary School, the sea otter delivers an important message.

“We have a saying here that otters don’t do anything less it’s fun, and we want the kids to know learning is fun, too,” said Nina Senn, of Montclair, Oakland Unified School District board member for District 4.

A colorful new mural celebrated June 10 will give schoolchildren that reminder daily.

The 25-foot-long mural is a mosaic that features sea otters playing in a kelp forest amid bright red and pink anemones, crab, octopus and other ocean creatures.
